SCHOOL CHILDREN BUILD A BACKYARD HABITAT IN THE CLASSROOM
Project
Includes a Pondless Waterfall to Attract Birds
(Hatboro): Thirteen 3rd & 4th graders at Upper
Moreland Intermediate School participated in the Advanced Ponds for Kids class,
offered as part of the HSA's Winter Enrichment program. During their six
week class, the students created a backyard habitat that would attract various
forms of wildlife and provide them with a sustainable place to live.
Their project includes a pond, complete with plants and fish, as well as a
pondless waterfall. It is beautifully landscaped and illuminated with
colored lights for nighttime enjoyment.
One hour a week after school, the students worked together as a team, using
their math and science skills, to build their indoor water feature and
surrounding landscape. As the weeks progressed and the project took
shape, the children could see how they were imitating Nature right in their
classroom. Birds, butterflies, frogs, and dragonflies are a few of the creatures
that would visit to find food and water. The environment they created
would provide shelter and a place for animals to raise their young. A
bird feeder and butterfly hibernation box were added for a realistic look. The
project provides the four essential elements for creating a healthy and
sustainable wildlife habitat, as recommended by the National Wildlife
Federation.
The student's will proudly show off their water feature and backyard habitat
this Monday March 3, 2008 at 3:30 pm. Their parents, grandparents and siblings
are invited to hear their presentation and congratulate them on their
accomplishment.
